“I’m not good at blind dates,” Lyric muttered. She turned from side to side as she studied her reflection in the mirror. “Things get all hot and heavy and the next thing you know, I’m trying to get inside his head. Literally.”

Mommy lifted a patient eyebrow, her face otherwise devoid of emotion. Being an immortal, she must’ve seen it all. Including insecure zombie-girls. Lyric huffed. Mommy handed her a white gauzy dress.

“Any words of wisdom?” Lyric pressed.

“Don’t eat him out on the first date,” Mommy dead-panned.

“Ha, ha.”

Mommy cracked a rare smile.

“What if he doesn’t like pale girls with obvious stitching marks on her body?”

“He does. I picked him specifically. He’s a reborn mummy with all his working parts. He knows what to expect.”

“A mummy?” Lyric questioned? “A mummy? A hoity-toity, I’m-better-than-you mummy? You know, the only difference between a mummy and a zombie is the pedigree and the quality of clothing. That’s it. You know that, right?”

“And brain eating.”

Lyric swished her hand in the air, “That’s so minor.”

“Who are you trying to convince?” Mommy pulled Lyric’s hair into a loose twist, careful not to pull so hard that the fine strands came out of her scalp.

“I thought you said he would be a good match for me.”

Mommy put her hands on her hips. “You’re having dinner in my diner downstairs. It’s loaded with paranormals just like you and he. If you make a dive for his scalp, someone will be there to pull you back.”

She saw the worry on her own face in the mirror. “Promise?” she asked, needing to hear it.

Mommy arranged two curling strands on either side of Lyric’s face. “I promise.”

Lyric spun around and hugged her. Mommy held her stiffly in her arms, but Lyric didn’t pull back right away. She was too excited. “This is going to be the best birthday, ever!”

“I’ll take that with a grain of salt considering you spent the last three in the ground.”

“What did you get me?” Lyric asked.

“A date.”

Lyric grinned. “With a real boy.”

“Who used to be a dead boy.” Mommy went for the door. “Seven o’clock, downstairs. Don’t make him wait.”
